Great find! Kirk Albert Profiled

What a great write-up for SDDA member Kirk Albert!  Read the full article here!

Vintage and antique expert Kirk Albert migrated to the great Pacific Northwest from Detroit twelve years ago backed by a hypothesis: the Theory of Evolution would have to apply to Seattle’s relative isolation. He says he goes by the Darwinian philosophy that the cultures that are most isolated develop creatively at a more accelerated pace because they are free from outside influences and left to their own devices. “I figure that you have to travel over two mountain ranges to get to where we are,” Albert explains, “so the people here have to solve their own problems and create their own solutions. That’s what inspires us to come up with a lot of great things.”
Among those great things is Kirk Albert Vintage Furnishings, the Georgetown storefront where he has amassed an inspiring collection of quirky, eccentric, one-of-a-kind finds. Albert warns that many of the things in his gallery-like shop may provoke embarrassment, shock, or titilation, but he adds that customers’ laughter is like “music to his ears” because it tells him that they understand the message he’s trying to get across. We caught up with Albert to try to figure out just what that message might be.

“DIGS Vintage” Featured in Seattle Times/NWSource

Two new vintage home furnishing shops join Georgetown’s ‘Design District’

Georgetown is rapidly becoming the destination of choice if you’re looking for some funky, hip vintage home décor.  In the last eight months, two new vintage furnishing shops, DIGS Vintage & Antiques and Useful Vintage Goods have arrived on the scene, joining Kirk Albert Vintage Furnishings (formerly Great Stuff Seattle), Susan Wheeler Home and Fruitcocktail Collectibles in what many call Seattle’s “Design District.”

Designer Dixie Stark and her husband, Jay, opened DIGS Vintage & Antiques six months ago. The shop is an offshoot of Dixie’s eponymous furniture showroom Dixie Stark Home, which showcases her own furniture collection, as well as other lines in Dixie’s signature style, which she defines as “tailored contemporary furnishings with traditional influences mixed with a dose of vintage and pops of color.” Both businesses are housed in incredible buildings built by the Starks and made from international cargo containers.

The Starks work with local dealers and consigners to fill DIGS with an impressive array of antiques (more than 100 years old), vintage pieces (at least 25 years old) and collectibles (tchotchkes) ranging in price from $12 for a circa 1970s figurine just bad enough to be good, to thousands for stately European pieces.

With three floors to meander through, DIGS is chock full of art, furniture, jewelry, lamps, tables, chairs, cabinets, treasures and found objects too eclectic to categorize, but with high enough style to fit proudly into the finest homes.

DIGS Vintage & Antiques is located at 612 South Lucile St., Seattle 98108. The phone number is (206) 651-4115 and the shop is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, noon- 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sundays by chance.

Jane Piper Reid Announces New Product Lines

Jane Piper Reid to carry Christian Fischbacher, Alderto, and Steven Harsey

Christian Fischbacher  was founded in 1819 in St. Gallen, Switzerland and its headquarters are still located in the traditional Swiss textile City. From thrilling graphic patterns to enchantingly romantic floral designs, the Christian Fischbacher collection is entirely created in the company’s own studio in St. Gallen in Switzerland, where the family has been based ever since its foundation. The textile collection of Christian Fischbacher are distinguished by outstanding design and high quality, all created by the Fischbacher design studio. These original designs are sourced worldwide from the best weaving mills in Europe and Asia who maintain the high standards set by Christian Fischbacher.  These exclusive collections are created for an astute international clientele and include a wide collection of decorative fabrics for upholstery and bedding.

Based in the experience of its founder, Alberto Dias, and combined with the energy and enthusiasm his daughters, Susana and Magda, “Aldeco” is a family company that has been leaving its mark in the European interior fabrics market since 1993.  In 1999, Aldeco successfully presented its first collection of interior fabrics, with their “Abitare by Aldeco” brand and ever since their growth has been remarkable.  Wherever it has been exposed as a brand, the Aldeco name has given rise to its own identity and style, identifiable by itself and with a dimension that has managed to become important to interior designers and architects throughout Europe.   Aldeco now distributes to 28 countries and as of July 2010 will be distributed by Harsey and Associates in the U.S.A.

Harsey and Associates was founded in 1979 becoming the first company to import silk fabrics for the U.S. home furnishings industry under the Orient Express Silk Collection identity specializing in woven silk fabrics from India and Thailand.  Steven Harsey Textiles began where Orient Express left off— with high-end exclusive decorative fabrics, not just in silk. . . always primarily focused on natural fiber fabrics. In the mid-1990’s several trips to Europe led to discovery of unique weaving mills in Italy, France, Belgium, and Germany.  Working with our exclusive designs from leading artists around the world and with the mill’s own archives, new patterns and colors are constantly being created to separate our collection from the large mass-market distributors.   The collection continues to grow as Steven and Rosemary travel the world looking for that special piece of art, a wonderful new textile construction, and new fashion leading colors to set the trends, not just follow them.

Seattle Design Center pairs local interior designers and artists to create today’s ‘chair’

Take 10 interior designers, 10 artists and 10 dining room-style chairs, allow their creative juices to flow, and what do you get? “The Chair Project,” a fascinating experiment in design and art created by two Seattle design icons – Seattle Design Center and Pratt Fine Arts Center.

Not just a functional piece of furniture, the chair has risen from a simple three-legged stool to rest a weary body to a symbol of dignity that is still used as the emblem of authority in the House of Commons in the United Kingdom and Canada. In some cases, it has morphed into an iconic design form, proudly displayed in museums throughout the world as a result of breakthrough designs from American architects Charles and Ray Eames and Denmark furniture designer Verner Panton.

Given the rich history of the chair and the ubiquity of the form, Seattle Design Center has launched a project to pair the creativity of designers and artists and cull their versions of today’s chair through the unique marriage of process, aesthetics and vision. Each team starts with the bones of a chair provided by Chicago furniture maker Baker. The teams will come together Feb. 17, 2011, to reveal their creations at Seattle Design Center’s Northwest Design Awards Gala. After that, the chairs will be displayed at Nordstrom in downtown Seattle and other venues throughout the city until they are auctioned off in August 2011, with proceeds benefitting Pratt.

“The idea for the chair project started by wondering how to create a partnership between the worlds of art and design,” said Craig Cross, marketing manager of Seattle Design Center. “And then I began to debate the idea of using an iconic furniture item, like a chair, as the foundation for a shared project. We originally wanted the finished pieces to be functioning chairs, but as we discussed the idea with Pratt, realized that applying fewer limitations would generate a far more interesting conversation.” Therefore, the designers and artists are challenged to add, subtract or repurpose their designs – to create a chair, wall art, an abstract sculpture, or a chandelier.

“It will be interesting to see how each influences the project,” Cross said. “I assume there has been some push and pull between the disciplines, so I am excited to see what results from that dialogue.”
