Seattle Children’s PlayGarden to Partner for Sidewalk Sale!
For our second year in a row, the Seattle Children’s PlayGarden will partner with the SDDA for our annual Summer Sidewalk Sale on September 8th! The PlayGarden is a great charity partner to work with and we hope to raise a great donation this year through our Raffel Ticket event during the Sidewalk Sale!
Be sure to come by early, and stay late! We will be having food trucks, live entertianment, and of coarse, the PlayGarden will have lots for your kids to explore!

SDDA Member Miller Paint spruce up Cafe Racer
A team of professional painters gave their time and talent on Tuesday to reviving the exterior of Cafe Racer Espresso, the artsy, quirky hub of the city’s alt-rock community that was the scene of a bloody massacre May 30.

SDDA Member Miller Paint Acquires Kelley-Moore Chain!
Miller Paint Co., Inc. has entered into a strategic agreement with Kelly-Moore Paint Company, Inc. to acquire the business operations and selected assets of ten Kelly-Moore Paints stores located in the Puget Sound area. Miller will maintain and operate nine locations, while a tenth Kelly-Moore store in Kent, Wash., will be closed and consolidated into Miller Paint’s Kent store. Between now and the transaction close date, scheduled for April 30, 2012, Kelly-Moore and Miller will work together to transition the Kelly-Moore store operations, employees and professional outside sales teams over to Miller Paint. Maintaining the high level of customer service that is the hallmark of both Miller Paint and Kelly-Moore in the Pacific Northwest is at the forefront of this seamless transition. On April 30, ownership of the business at the nine Kelly-Moore stores will transfer to Miller Paint, with no other changes to the store’s operations initially planned. Read more here!

Seattle’s Design District hosts its first Sidewalk Sale on Saturday, Sept. 17
Georgetown is home to Seattle’s Design District Association (SDDA), a group of interior design professionals and merchants whose goal it is to provide you with the chicest abode imaginable.
This Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., more than 60 vendors will set up their treasures for the home in two parking lots in the heart of Georgetown at 5600 Sixth Ave. S. for the first annual SDDA Sidewalk Sale.

Beloved SDDA Member Sally Eustis Dies in Biking Accident
We regret to say our lovely and gracious Sally Eustis, a founding board member and secretary to the Seattle Design District Association, was hit by a car while riding her bicycle on a quiet Walla Walla road, Saturday, May 21 and instantly taken from us. Two new vintage home furnishing shops join Georgetown’s ‘Design District’
Georgetown is rapidly becoming the destination of choice if you’re looking for some funky, hip vintage home décor. In the last eight months, two new vintage furnishing shops, DIGS Vintage & Antiques and Useful Vintage Goods have arrived on the scene, joining Kirk Albert Vintage Furnishings (formerly Great Stuff Seattle), Susan Wheeler Home and Fruitcocktail Collectibles in what many call Seattle’s “Design District.”
Designer Dixie Stark and her husband, Jay, opened DIGS Vintage & Antiques six months ago. The shop is an offshoot of Dixie’s eponymous furniture showroom Dixie Stark Home, which showcases her own furniture collection, as well as other lines in Dixie’s signature style, which she defines as “tailored contemporary furnishings with traditional influences mixed with a dose of vintage and pops of color.” Both businesses are housed in incredible buildings built by the Starks and made from international cargo containers.
The Starks work with local dealers and consigners to fill DIGS with an impressive array of antiques (more than 100 years old), vintage pieces (at least 25 years old) and collectibles (tchotchkes) ranging in price from $12 for a circa 1970s figurine just bad enough to be good, to thousands for stately European pieces.
With three floors to meander through, DIGS is chock full of art, furniture, jewelry, lamps, tables, chairs, cabinets, treasures and found objects too eclectic to categorize, but with high enough style to fit proudly into the finest homes.

12th Annual Northwest Design Awards Competition Winners Announced
The Seattle Design Center (SDC) celebrated the best of regional interior design with its twelfth annual Northwest Design Awards Competition. Designers, architects and students competed with projects in ten competition categories. A panel of local subject experts (industry and media) evaluated submissions through an anonymous process, measuring each project on the basis of proportion, composition, use of space, materials and appropriateness of the design solution. This year’s categories were: bathroom, bedroom, commercial, hospitality, kitchen, outdoor living, student design, whole house (less than $400,000), whole house (more than $400,000) and yacht/jet.
More than 250 members of the design community attended the awards presentation—the Northwest Design Awards Gala—February 17, 2011.

Based in the experience of its founder, Alberto Dias, and combined with the energy and enthusiasm his daughters, Susana and Magda, “Aldeco” is a family company that has been leaving its mark in the European interior fabrics market since 1993. Seattle Design Center pairs local interior designers and artists to create today’s ‘chair’
Take 10 interior designers, 10 artists and 10 dining room-style chairs, allow their creative juices to flow, and what do you get? “The Chair Project,” a fascinating experiment in design and art created by two Seattle design icons – Seattle Design Center and Pratt Fine Arts Center.
Not just a functional piece of furniture, the chair has risen from a simple three-legged stool to rest a weary body to a symbol of dignity that is still used as the emblem of authority in the House of Commons in the United Kingdom and Canada. In some cases, it has morphed into an iconic design form, proudly displayed in museums throughout the world as a result of breakthrough designs from American architects Charles and Ray Eames and Denmark furniture designer Verner Panton.
Given the rich history of the chair and the ubiquity of the form, Seattle Design Center has launched a project to pair the creativity of designers and artists and cull their versions of today’s chair through the unique marriage of process, aesthetics and vision. Each team starts with the bones of a chair provided by Chicago furniture maker Baker. The teams will come together Feb. 17, 2011, to reveal their creations at Seattle Design Center’s Northwest Design Awards Gala. After that, the chairs will be displayed at Nordstrom in downtown Seattle and other venues throughout the city until they are auctioned off in August 2011, with proceeds benefitting Pratt.
“The idea for the chair project started by wondering how to create a partnership between the worlds of art and design,” said Craig Cross, marketing manager of Seattle Design Center. “And then I began to debate the idea of using an iconic furniture item, like a chair, as the foundation for a shared project. We originally wanted the finished pieces to be functioning chairs, but as we discussed the idea with Pratt, realized that applying fewer limitations would generate a far more interesting conversation.” Therefore, the designers and artists are challenged to add, subtract or repurpose their designs – to create a chair, wall art, an abstract sculpture, or a chandelier.
“It will be interesting to see how each influences the project,” Cross said. “I assume there has been some push and pull between the disciplines, so I am excited to see what results from that dialogue.”
